Barb deeply understood community and what community meant. She understood it was about geography and neighborhoods in the City of Ottawa and the larger Ottawa Region. She knew the geography. She understood that community was about people. And relationships with people. And she understood that within those relationships, there were different communities of particular interest groups: the arts community or the LGBT community and how neighborhood associations cared about its own neighborhood. And she knew those were communities within communities. She understood and practiced it every day. She knew the way to engage with those communities was through relationships she developed. She put time into developing relationships; she put energy; she put skill, and the result was trust. People trusted Barb in these groups, and many others.out her mother. And her father, whom I knew much better than her mother. I was always struck by the loving, respectful way that Barb spoke about her family. And I understood that Barb never forgot who she was even though she knew she was accomplished, polished, well known, and a star. I really appreciated that about Barb.
